NOTES

  1. A cable is a one-dimensional flexible body that is associated with an edge, EdgeName, used for the representation of multibody systems.
  2. The geometry of the cable is inherited from edge, EdgeName, which must have an associated curve, CurveName. The end points of the curve must match the points associated with the vertices of the edge. The finite element discretization of the cable is controlled by the curve mesh parameters, which must be associated with this curve.
  3. The cable configuration is defined by a sole displacement field, no rotations are involved. This contrasts with all other elements that involve both displacements and rotations. Consequently, cables can only be connected to boundary conditions, or spherical joints. Connection of a cable to a beam or any other element of the model must be done though a spherical joint.
  4. The structural mass and stiffness properties of the cable, as well as its pretension are specified by the cable property, CblPropName. The pretension in the cable is only used in static analysis and varies in time according to the time function, TimfunName. The pretension and its associated time function are ignored in dynamic analysis.
  5. It is possible to attach comments to the definition of the object; these comments have no effect on its definition.

Graphical parameters

The appearance of the cable during the visualization phase of the analysis can be controlled by associating graphical parameters, GrfParamName to the element. The following representation is valid for cable elements: RepresentationType = LINE that depicts the cable as a line along the curve CurveName that defines the cable element. Default value: LINE. The following vector fields are valid for cable elements: VfdType = FORCES, STRAINS or VELOCITIES.

Sensors

  1. Sensors can be defined to extract information about modal super-elements. The following SensorType and associated FrameName specifications are allowed for modal super-elements: DISPLACEMENTS, EIGEN_DISPLACEMENTS, EIGEN_FORCES, FORCES, POSITIONS, STRAINS, and VELOCITIES. (Default value: DISPLACEMENTS).
  2. The location of the sensor within the cable element is determined by a single u value (0 ≤ u ≤ 1) that corresponds to the η value along the curve defining the cable element. No v value is accepted for the cable element.
